Born and raised in Albany, Georgia, Betty received her elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Dougherty County. She has been married for nearly 40 years to Mr. Robert Dickens, a native of Dothan, Alabama. They lived in Albany for nine years before moving to Dothan in 1988.
After relocating to Dothan, Betty went to work as a Program Assistant for the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service. She taught prenatal nutrition, parenting, and money management to low-income families in Houston County. She resigned from the Houston County Extension Service in 1999 to work with her husband in their family business.
For more than 30 years, Betty has served as secretary, bookkeeper, office manager and quality control officer for Dickens Car Care and Janitorial Service. She was instrumental in creating a customer base for DCCJS that includes corporate clients, government agencies, and educational institutions.
In 1991, Betty graduated summa cum laude from Bethany Bible College and Seminary. In 1998, she graduated with honors from George C. Wallace Community College with an Associate of Science degree. In 2009, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Troy University.
For almost two decades, her happiest assignment was as Youth Pastor at Evangelical Faith Vision Ministries. During her tenure, she established an annual college scholarship and book award, developed an 18-member team of young people from various cities to conduct youth evangelism, and created a drama team and several dance groups including New Vision Dance Fellowship.
In 2011 Betty began serving as an Intervention Specialist for Cottonwood High School in Cottonwood, Alabama. In response to the need, she created a character education program called “I-Choose!” She has continued to share her gift for communication through various other publications, including BRILLIANCE Magazine which she produces and distributes bi-annually.
In addition, her weekly radio show, “Life Lessons with Betty Dickens” is heard over Magic 93.1 FM WBBK each Sunday morning at 9:00 am CDT.
Intent on using every gift God has given her to help others, Betty recently acquired the 2330 building on Montgomery Highway to house Betty Dickens Education and Training.
